Why the Interest in Leadership?

In an earlier blog I mentioned how much I gained from a Theology of Leadership class at TEDS taught by Guy Saffold.  Dr. Saffold and I both began our study of leadership about 25 years ago.  When I made the transition from pastoral ministry to an administrative role in a parachurch organization in 1982, there was no such thing as a leadership seminar to attend.  Since my Master of Divinity degree program in the ealry 1970s had no leadership or administration corses, I sensed the need to get some training in administration.  My first exposure to this area of study was a seminar offered by the American Management Association.  It was an overview of the classical management tasks and organizational dynamics.  According to Dr. Saffold if a person wanted to stay current with what was published on the topic of leadership in 1982, one would only need to read one book per month.  Today a person would have to read 2 books a day to stay current with the number of leadership books published annually.  In a future blog I will explore why there has been such an interest in the study of leadership and its impact on church leadership.

Don, when are we ever going to find time to read the hundreds of new books being published on leadership each month? I have seen your bookshelf, I think you are about as close as anyone to staying current!
